ABOUT THE PĀKAʻA PROJECT:
In Fall 2015, Chamber Music Hawaii (CMH) will increase access to music education resources for teachers in both ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi and English-speaking classrooms by offering live performances of “Pāka’a Lanakila!” by CMHʻs Spring Wind Quintet to communities statewide, in both languages, combined with a bilingual CD recording and a free, downloadable bilingual Study Guide with artwork by noted Big Island artist, Caren Loebel-Fried.
The classic coming-of-age story first appeared in Hawaiian language newspapers during the late 19th century and was given a musical setting by composer Jon Magnussen in 2011, commissioned by CMH with funding from the Honolulu Mayorʻs Office on Culture and the Arts. The story is told by a flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon, with a narrator in an engaging and unique music education offering for audiences, especially grades 3-5. A generous grant from the Kosasa Foundation enabled the recording of “Pāka’a Lanakila!” in the original English version, and the development and recording of a Hawaiian-language version, created in close collaboration with Kalama Cabigon and Sam ‘Ohu Gon III, experts in Hawaiian oral traditions.
Supporters of the recent Kickstarter campaign made possible the creation of a new bilingual Study Guide, to be released in late July, 2015, and downloadable from the CMH website: www.chambermusichawaii.org.
